Your first destination is Auckland; a beautiful blend of landscape, Polynesian culture, glistening harbours and modern city environment. Not only is Auckland close to the beaches but it is also close to over twelve different Islands.

Rotorua an exciting city with a vast history, tradition and culture. It is surrounded by volcanoes, lakes, parks and is a great place to go hiking or to view native birds and animals. The surrounding areas are a geothermal wonderland, with geysers, boiling mud pools, and steaming craters.

Your self drive from Rotorua to Napier is an easy three hour drive filled with fantastic scenery. There's a bit of everything - rugged hills, beautiful valleys, gentle plains and huge vistas. There are lots of things to see and do especially so allow time during the day to make stops at locations that interest you.

The town of Eskdale heralds your arrival in Napier. In 1931 a devastating earthquake nearly leveled this city. It was rebuilt in the style of the times, and is now considered the Art Deco Capital of the world. The vineyards of Hawke's Bay are all within easy reach of Napier. Another attraction is the gannet colony at Cape Kidnappers.

The self drive from Napier to Martinborough is a four hour drive but you will want to allow plenty of time for all of the wonderful and unique towns and attractions along the way. Martinborough itself is a quaint little town and the wineries there are lovely.

Wellington is New Zealand's capital city, also known as the arts and culture capital. A special blend of heritage buildings, museums and galleries, fine food and live entertainment. The central city is nestled between a beautiful harbour and forested hills. Wildlife sanctuaries, islands, seaside villages, ocean beaches and regional parks provide huge scope for outdoor fun.

Travel to South New Zealand, breathe in the fresh air, take in the blue skies, sun and snow, mountains, lakes, bush and birds. In Christchurch you'll experience the exciting Tranz Alpine Safari and in Queenstown, ride the Gondola to the top of Bob's peak. If you are really looking for some fun try the Luge.

The attractive town of Te Anau lies nestled on the edge of this beautiful lake, with a spectacular backdrop of Mt Luxmore and the Murchison mountains. The glowworm caves here are the best in New Zealand.

The drive from Te Anau to Bluff is a nice journey and delivers you to the wharf to take the ferry over to Stewart Island. Stewart Island offers a special experience: a glimpse into a simpler, slower lifestyle, in rhythm with the sea and the tides, attuned to the natural world of bush and beach. In 2002 the very qualities that make this a great place to treasure were recognized in the formation of the Rakiura National Park, comprising 85% of the Island.

From Stewart Island you will ferry back to Bluff and drive along the eastern coastline called the Southern Scenic Route. The Caitlins are one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand and is where the forest meets the water. Dunedin is your ultimate destination. Dunedin offers a blend of natural history, attractions, culture, recreation and entertainment that, in combination with all the attractions along the Southern Scenic Route, will make your tour a truly memorable experience.

Day 1 - International Flight - Los Angeles to Auckland (Own Arrangements): Shortly after departing Los Angeles you will be served dinner and you will be given breakfast before landing in Auckland.

Day 4 - Day Tour - Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre and Geothermal Park: Be guided through the greenstone, wood carving and flax weaving schools at the New Zealand Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, Rotowhio Pa, Kiwi Conservation Centre and Te Whajarewarea geotherm valley. You'll visit an ancient Maori valley where geysers, mud pools and boiling waters still play after 40,000 years.

Days 5 to 11 - Car Rental - Pick up in Rotorua and Drop off in Wellington (Aotea Quay): Discover New Zealand as you travel by rental car for six days.

Day 5 - Self Drive from Rotorua to Napier: This morning drive from Rotorua by Lake Taupo and on to Napier, Hawkes Bay.

Rotorua sits squarely on the Pacific Ring of Fire, so volcanic activity is part of the city's past and present. Explore the geothermal areas and discover the unique culture of New Zealand's Maori people. Rotorua is entertaining in any weather, at any time of the year.

The road to Taupo will keep you entertained with its unusual, volcanic geography. Stop on the drive to Taupo and walk over the Huka Falls lookout bridge. Take a jet boat ride to experience the scenery of the mighty Waikato River and the stunning Tutukau Gorge.
You'll also drive through large tracts of plantation pine forest.The resort town of Taupo sits on the edge of New Zealand's largest lake, which is well stocked with sizeable trout.

The major entertainment on the road from Taupo to Napier is the fantastic scenery. There's a bit of everything - rugged hills, beautiful valleys, gentle plains and huge vistas. At Tarawera you can walk to the hot springs, which are above the Waipunga River. You might also want to stop at the Waiarua Falls lookout, to view the twin waterfalls.

Days 5 to 7 - 2 Nights Accommodation in Napier: Enjoy your stay in the Wine Region of South New Zealand for 2 nights.

A great climate with day upon day of sunshine makes Napier a year-round tourist destination and you will quickly feel relaxed as you wander through the streets amongst the splendour of the Art Deco buildings. Stop by the National Aquarium and get splashed by the dolphins and seals at Marineland of New Zealand. Visit one of the many wineries on a wine tour. Or choose from one of the many other activities in Napier - from a early morning hot air balloon adventure to an art deco walk.

Your vacation accommodation is within strolling distance of the CBD, shopping area and all the attractions Marine Parade has to offer. The Hawkes Bay Wineries are just a short drive away. Your accommodation offers an internet caf�, fitness centre, free car parking, guest laundry and comfortable units with a double bed with single bed, Sky TV, ceiling fan, hairdryer and iron & ironing board. Day 7 - Self Drive from Napier to Martinborough: Today self-drive from Napier, Hawkes Bay to Martinborough.

Start your self drive from Napier to Hastings. Hastings was devastated by a huge earthquake in 1931. As a result, the city has a great deal of remarkable Art Deco and Spanish Mission-style architecture. Fabulous parks and delicious ice cream are two other reasons to visit Hastings. In the apple and pear season, there's no better place to be. Hastings is New Zealand's leading pipfruit region.

On the drive from Hastings, you'll encounter a wildlife sanctuary at Mt Bruce and the legendary town of Eketahuna (in kiwi slang Eketahuna is the archetypal hick town). The Tararua Windfarm (it makes electricity out of thin air) is a little further north to see it, follow the road to Ballance. After the antique shops of Woodville you can inspect locally made knitwear in Dannevirke, a town originally settled by Scandinavians. The rural service towns of Waipukurau and Waipawa both have historic buildings to view.

Every year in March, Masterton hosts the international Golden Shears competition. Sheep shearing in the Wairarapa is both a sport and an art form. The town's main park has an aviary, aquarium, deer park and a small boating lake. Or you could rediscover your childhood at the local toy museum.

Enjoy the clean, green scenery as you drive north through the friendly townships of the Wairarapa. In Featherston you'll find an interesting locomotive museum. Greytown has many beautiful examples of Victorian architecture and a quaint museum take yourself on a self-guided walk. Carterton is a good place to shop for paua shell souvenirs it's also a place to enjoy daffodils in the spring.

In recent years, Martinborough has become the gourmet capital of the lower North Island. It is home to over 25 boutique vineyards, several fabulous restaurants and a number of upmarket bed and breakfast establishments. From the charming town square, you can walk to most of the local attractions.

Day 9 - Self Drive from Martinborough to Wellington: Take a short-drive from Martinborough to Wellington approximately 1 hour.

After the town of Featherston, which has an interesting locomotive museum, you'll climb up and over the Rimutaka Range - great views in every direction. Once the mountains are behind you, it's easy driving for the rest of your journey. You'll wind through the picturesque Hutt Valley then a fast moving motorway will whisk you into the city.

Wellington is compact, cultured and full of character. Nestled between the harbour and the hills, the downtown area is ideal for explorations on foot. Enjoy cafes, restaurants, museums and all kinds of shops. Dance, theatre and musical performances are a Wellington specialty. As New Zealand's capital, this city is rich in political history.

Day 11 - TranzCoastal Railway to Christchurch: The Coastal Pacific train journey travels between the delightful port of Picton and Christchurch.

This 5.5 hour scenic feast is one of the world's most scenic train journeys. The Coastal Pacific travels through 22 tunnels and crosses 175 bridges, one of them being New Zealand's only road-rail bridge.

Your day begins with a hotel pick up that takes you to the train station for boarding on the famous TranzAlpine train, rated one of the top six train journeys in the world. This scenic rail experience takes you westward across the rich agricultural belt of the Canterbury Plains, river canyons, tunnels and viaducts to the grand mountains of the Southern Alps and Arthur's Pass.

Make no mistake, the Nevis Highwire Bungy is not for the nervous - with a wild 134 metres (440 feet) drop, the river seems to rush towards you faster than you're rushing towards it!

Situated on picturesque Lake Whakatipu�s south-western shores, Walter Peak High Country Farm is an idyllic place. Day 16 - Day Tour - Doubtful Sound Experience Tour - Full Day (Ends in Te Anau): When you discover Doubtful Sound you will be struck by its silence, a silence broken only by birdsong, or maybe the rushing of a distant waterfall.

Your Doubtful Sound adventure begins as you cruise the crystal clear waters of Lake Manapouri. Then its over Wilmot Pass, stopping along the way to experience some of Fiordland's densest rainforest and to view the colourful alpine moss gardens.

On reaching Deep Cove, you will board our spacious catamaran for a three hour cruise that takes in the most dramatic scenery of Doubtful Sound. Our skippers provide a detailed commentary and point out highlights. Keep a look out for wildlife as bottlenose dolphins frequently come alongside our vessel, fur seals bask on the rocks around the fiord and rare penguins can at times be observed. Full Day Tour.

Your Te Anau Glowworm Cave adventure begins with a scenic cruise across Lake Te Anau to the western side of the lake. Upon arrival there is time to view informative displays at Cavern House before our friendly guides invite you to accompany them underground in small groups. Explore a mysterious underground world of rushing water before drifting in silent darkness beneath the luminous shimmer of thousands of glowworms in the glowworm grotto.

Day 17 - Shuttle Transfer Te Anau to Bluff: Your coach will transfer you from Ta Anau to Stewart Island this morning. Enjoy the beautiful South Island scenery along the way plus an hour long ferry ride to the remotely beautiful Stewart Island!
Days 17 & 19 - Ferry Transfers from Bluff Harbour to Stewart Island (return): During the one-hour ferry crossing between Bluff and Stewart Island keep a look out for wildlife, including seals, dolphins and sea birds. The friendly staff provide informative commentaries and point out highlights.
Days 17 to 19 - 2 Nights Accommodation on Stewart Island: Stewart Island is perfect for a day excursion or an extended stay.

With georgous bays, beautiful sand beaches and densely forested hills, Stewart Island has a combination of landscapes. Stewart Island has been named `The Home of the Kiwi.` It has the highest number of accessible species in New Zealand.In just one day, one can usually access over 30 species. Located in Waka o te Wera or Paterson Inlet, with 11km of coastline, Ulva Island is a scenic gem of unsurpassed beauty; an open preditor free bird sanctuary. Ulva Island is easily accessed by a short watertaxi ride across Paterson Inlet from Golden Bay. Under the luxuriant green mantle of podocarp forest the Ulva Island walks are rich with mosses, ferns, liverworts, filmy ferns and native orchids.

You will encounter rare and endangered bird and plant speciesin this paradise for birds and bird lovers, only 266 hectares with great walking tracks, located in the southern-most island of New Zealand, Stewart Island.

Day 19 - Shuttle Transfer Bluff to Invergargill: Your coach will transport you from the Ferry terminal in Bluff to Invercargill.
Day 19 - Rental Car - Pick up in Invercargill and Drop off in Dunedin: Discover New Zealand as you travel by rental car for two days.

Take the opportunity to explore parts of New Zealand in and around your vacation town. Please bring a valid American driver's license with you and be aware that in New Zealand people drive on the left hand side of the road.

Day 19 - Self Drive from Invercagill to Dunedin: Today drive approximately 3.5 hours from from Invercargill to Dunedin along the Southern Scenic Route.

Leaving Invercargill you travel on the Scenic Southern Route, through some of the most lush and fertile farmland in New Zealand before entering the Catlins. The Catlins is an area where native forest meets the waters edge; a place of hidden waterfalls and river valleys; of rocky coastal bays, inlets and estuaries where the great Pacific Ocean bites into the land.There is an abundance of wildlife and Nugget Point (Tokata) is a stunning and accessible place for viewing seals and penguins.

Further travel through the Catlins brings your to the rich, green, rolling hills of South Otago, an area steeped in history. Early colonial architecture is a feature of many of the buildings in this area. Balclutha services and surrounding farming communities and provides a convenient break or stopover for the traveller.

Lake Waihola marks the turning point of travel toward the coast and the charming seaside villages of Taieri Mouth and Brighton. Stroll along the deserted beaches with soft white sand that stretches for miles. Clamber over the rocky outcrops and watch the crashing waves.

Dunedin marks the conclusion of your tour of the Southern Scenic Route. Dunedin is a bustling university city, celebrated for its architecture, museums, galleries, and theatres. The Octagon is the showpiece and centre of this vibrant city. Enjoy the streetlife while sipping coffee at an outdoor cafe or pick a spot in the sun under the statue of Robbie Burns. Optional Day Tour (Not Included) - Dunedin Larnach Castle: With its exciting, sometimes scandalous, sometimes tragic history, its magnificent carved ceilings, New Zealand antiques and breathtaking views, Larnach Castle offers you a vision of the past and present.

Settle back and enjoy the coach drive up and over the Peninsula high road, offering spectacular views out over the Pacific Ocean on one side and the beautiful Otago harbour on the other. Your driver will provide an informative commentary along the way as you pass through stone-walled farmlets.

On arrival at Larnach Castle you will be taken on a guided tour through the 'halls of power and scandal' of this historic 19th century home. From the castle turret you can survey the Otago Harbour below.

Visitors can enjoy exploring the Castle and the beautiful gardens, now an attraction in their own right. Original antiques grace the building and the family has amassed a unique collection of New Zealand furniture.

This tour can be done as a guide tour from Dunedin or if you have a rental car you can drive up and explore the castle on your own.

See them all on this cross-country adventure tour in an 8-wheel drive all terrain Argo vehicle. Also see Fort Taiaroa Fortifications (the Rerewahine battery WW11). Optional Day Tour (Not Included) - Dunedin Taire Train - Full Day: A visit to the city of Dunedin is not complete without a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway, one of Dunedin's top attractions and considered one of the world's great train trips.

Sit back and relax as the train negotiates this exhilarating narrow river gorge with cliff hugging tunnels and viaducts soaring high above the river or ride the open air platforms for that perfect photo! The train will also stop for you to disembark for scenic and photo opportunities. The ever-changing scenery along the way will leave you amazed at what scenery Dunedin has to offer.

Note: you will be traveling back across the International Date Line. Gain that day back you lost on the way over, you actually arrive in the USA on the same day you leave Auckland.
